Description

Engravings of vegetable plant plates, drawn by Madame Champin and Mademoiselle Coutance, dated 1855, 1857, 1859, 1862, 1866 and 1883.

Philippe de Vilmorin (1872-1917) presided over the period of greatest influence for Vilmorin-Andrieux, a seed and plant producer. It was at the end of the XIXe century that the company published its splendid Album Vilmorin with 46 illustrated plates. Some fifteen painters were employed by the company to build up a collection of agrobotanical iconography. Most of the artists had received their training at the Jardin des Plantes. This is particularly true of Elisa Champin, to whom we owe many of the most beautiful plates.
