The Sami are a indigenous people an area covering the north of the Swedenthe Norway and Finland as well as Kola Peninsula in Russia known as Lapland. Their endonym, Saami in their own language, is also sometimes written "Sámi", "Sames", "Samés" or "Sâmes". The Sámi speak Sami languages.

This people is often referred to as Lapps "but this term is not only a foreign termbut also originally pejorative, from the root lappwhich means "wearer of rags" in French. Swedish⁵. Similarly, they call their ancestral lands Sápmi not Lapland.
